With an impressive arsenal of accolades, his contributions to the national squad have undeniably influenced medal counts across various competitions. Through unwavering commitment, he has solidified his position as a pivotal member of the sport.

As fans eagerly consume career news, the timeline of achievements showcases moments that have left a lasting mark on player history. Each tournament adds a chapter to the narrative, highlighting exceptional performances and remarkable teamwork that resonate with aspiring athletes and spectators alike.

Charting this athlete’s progress reveals not only personal milestones but also the evolution of the national squad in a fiercely competitive environment. With each Olympic encounter, he has played a significant part in weaving a rich legacy, inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams on the court.

Strategies for Preparing Athletes for High-Pressure Competitions

One key approach is establishing a clear communication channel between coaches and athletes. Regular feedback sessions enable players to discuss their history and experiences, allowing them to learn from past performances. This dialogue helps build a cohesive understanding of individual strengths and areas that need improvement.

Implementing mental conditioning techniques can significantly aid athletes in high-pressure scenarios. Visualization practices equip competitors with the ability to mentally rehearse their performances, creating a sense of familiarity in competition. This technique often leads to better execution during actual events.

Use of breathing exercises to promote relaxation.

Incorporation of mindfulness practices to enhance focus.

Regular stress management workshops to prepare for competition intensity.

Tracking medal counts can serve as motivation, yet it is crucial to emphasize the value of personal goals. Encouraging athletes to set individual benchmarks fosters a sense of ownership and accountability. As they pursue their unique objectives, the pressure to perform may feel more manageable.

Leadership plays an essential role in creating a supportive environment that fosters resilience. Coaches should act as mentors, guiding athletes through tough moments and encouraging them to view setbacks as opportunities for growth. This support system enhances mental fortitude when competing under stress.

Finally, simulating competition conditions during practice helps athletes acclimate to the environment they will face. Implementing specific drills that replicate the intensity of competitive events prepares players both mentally and physically, ensuring they are ready to perform at their best.

Building Team Chemistry: Insights from Leadership Style

Establishing a strong foundation of interpersonal relationships among athletes is crucial. Encourage open communication and regular team-building activities. This approach helps in understanding player history, enhancing mutual respect, and fostering a sense of belonging. When players feel comfortable sharing their experiences, the entire group becomes more cohesive.

The influence of a leader’s ability to connect with individuals extends beyond strategic planning. Connecting on a personal level allows for tailored motivation techniques that resonate with each member. By being aware of career news and individual aspirations, a leader can cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued, ultimately improving overall productivity and unity within the squad.

In any competitive atmosphere, the significance of morale cannot be understated. Celebrating achievements, regardless of size, boosts confidence and motivates players to contribute actively. Keeping track of medal counts and highlighting personal milestones can inspire teammates to push each other further, strengthening their collective resolve during pressures of competition.

Reactive strategies, such as adapting roles based on player strengths and team dynamics, are vital. Such flexibility leads to enhanced synergy, allowing for strategic adjustments as needed. Being attentive to team sentiment and adjusting leadership style accordingly fosters a resilient unit that perseveres through challenges while striving for excellence.

Adapting Training Regimens for Different Olympic Sports

Customizing training approaches for various disciplines is crucial to maximize athletes’ performance. For instance, swimmers may benefit from endurance-based workouts mixed with speed drills, focusing on cardiovascular health and muscle strength. In contrast, gymnasts require a regimen emphasizing flexibility, balance, and precision movements. Tailoring these plans allows athletes to enhance their potential and adapt to the specific challenges posed by their sport.

Each sport demands unique techniques and skills, warranting distinct training methodologies. Track athletes might concentrate on sprint mechanics and interval training, applying tactical strength to improve sprint times. Conversely, team sports like volleyball integrate strategy and coordination drills, emphasizing teamwork alongside physical conditioning. Resourceful coaching can significantly impact the player history and career news of athletes pursuing Olympic success.

Analyzing Performance Metrics to Drive Success in the Olympics

Utilizing performance metrics is indispensable for enhancing training and competitive strategies. By closely monitoring medal counts alongside individual and team statistics, coaches can identify strengths and weaknesses, allowing for tailored approaches that maximize potential. Examining player history provides insights into patterns and trends that are instrumental in refining techniques and optimizing preparation methods.

In the fast-paced environment of the sporting arena, continuous adjustment based on data analysis can significantly impact outcomes. Career news is not only about achievements but also about growing from setbacks, making it essential for athletes to reflect on their previous performances.

Statystyki i trendy w branży gier online

Chemické složení slz a mořské vody

This is another episode in the saga (follow-up post to the original post) “Our address changed (both home and internet)” and how we started our little homestead. If you didn’t see that post or the Homesteading – The Chickens (episode 2) or Homesteading – The Goats (episode 3) articles (and you prefer reading things in their chronologically-correct order) feel free to go back and catch up. We’ll wait right here for ya.

So, in a nutshell, we moved to the property and a month later we got chickens (and then a chicken book), then a month later we got goats, (and then a goat book) and – you guessed it – a month after that we got our first cow (and then a cow book)!

We wanted miniature Jersey milk cows because they are not technically bred-down like toy lap dogs but are actually more the size that family milk cows were before being bred up to produce large amounts of milk for commercial dairy production lines.

We bought Buttercup as a just-weaned Heifer (young female) and she was still so small that we actually brought her home in the back of our truck with the boys holding her! By the time we got home they were covered in calf pee and poop and she was in love.

We wanted to wait until she was about 15 months to breed her because (even though she would technically be able to breed earlier) studies show that they have easier pregnancies and calving when they are a bit more mature and fully grown. Of course there would be another nine months wait after that before she would calve and freshen. Tick-tock.

We got impatient about 6 months after we bought her and bought a full-size Jersey milk cow that we found on the internet.

There should be a huge sign on the top of every computer ad saying, “Caveat emptor” – buyer beware! They told us over the phone whatever we wanted to hear and they were located at the other end of Florida so we couldn’t make the trip just to test-drive a cow. They told us she had just had a calf and was hand-milked (because we asked if she had been hand-milked!).

So, early in the morning on a beautiful day just before Christmas, Dwayne and the boys hooked a borrowed (and well-used) trailer to the back of the old Tundra. That morning was the first time we had actually seen the back of our good friends’ single horse trailer – there was no tag on it and they didn’t have one for it! No time for red tape and standing in line. Besides that, the tag offices wouldn’t open for a couple of days. A last minute decision (those are never the most well-thought ones!) found us grabbing the tag off our family van and slapping it on there with a “promise” that we’d not even *think* of speeding lest we be pulled over and questioned! Now, much like everything you may read in any of these how-we-started-homesteading posts – don’t do as we did, do as we say!

Despite the less-than-legal start, Dwayne and I headed up I-75 and the boys stayed back to hold the fort. The drive was easy and we stopped for a BBQ lunch before we turned left at the panhandle. It was a beautiful drive through the back roads (read: less trafficked and policed) of old Florida.

We arrived at the ranch (according to Google maps) but weren’t quite sure if it was the right place. Don’t you hate that feeling of driving up a loooonnnnngg drive, with a barking dog escort, and not being sure if it’s the right place? Don’t get me wrong. Dwayne and I both grew up in a little Florida Cracker redneck town (Hi Arcadia! Love y’all!) and were used to the “watchy’all want?” treatment but this wasn’t our neck of the redneck woods! We could have been a couple Yankee transplants for all they knew! A safe bet on their part considering there’s more of them than of us these days.

Eventually someone meandered out, then another, then some more, then pretty soon the whole stinkin’ audience was there for the impromptu rodeo (that’s my attempt at foreshadowing the story ; ). They showed us the cow and she looked good. We had the Mother Earth News printed out checklist of “what to look for when buying a dairy cow”. Check. Check. Check. Ok. Let’s check each teat and make sure they all work. The crowd begins to snicker and giggle. Well, more like hock, spit, and chuckle. “Sure, little lady, go on in there. We’ll just put her in the chute for ya.” I was the designated milk tester so in I went. I strode right up there in my best “you ain’t gonna intimidate me” attitude and started to pet her. Her name was “Polly”. Sweet Polly Purebred. I gradually worked my way down to her bag and gently touched the udder. So good, so far. I gave 1 good squirt on the 1st teat and that’s all she wrote. She kicked me and then slammed me between her and the chute boards. The crowd went wild! Where’s Underdog when you need him? Sweet Polly Purebred my hindquarter.

I came out shoutin’. “What do you mean she’s been hand-milked!?!?!” By the time they calmed the laughter the husband and wife duo both answered at the same time. Different answers. One was obviously lying. I gave Dwayne the “I’m outta here” look and headed for the truck. He followed after me and said God told him to get her!

I had legitimate questions as to why he and the Lord were chatting on the sidelines while I was the rodeo clown but knew in my heart I should have been doing the same thing instead of getting all up in the “flesh”. My spirit confirmed that I should go with his leading on it even though my pride was ready to kick some, uh, rump roast.

We made the cash transaction and headed home. It was a b-u-m-p-y ride! She did not like being chauffeured. The little rodeo burned up too much daylight and it was almost completely dark as we pulled onto our property and through the gates to the back pasture nearest the <del>barn</del>house. She came out buckin’. The calf could barely walk out on his own. Oh, did I forget to mention the “free” calf that came with her? A nice little bull calf.

First question from the boys, “Mama, why is that calf’s poop white?!” Answer, “Dwayne can I use your phone a minute?” Google search. It’s scours. Of course it is. Going in one end and coming out the other. We’d deal with that tomorrow in the daylight. For now we needed to milk her out. Right. Me: “Honey, you get to milk her this time!”

That didn’t work, so we called our buddies down the road that owned a raw milk micro dairy of Jerseys. Lori could do it! Bless her heart, she came in the dark and told us what to do. After the stars were well out (and the mosquitos!) she declared, “That cow is demon possessed! Try again in the morning.” That’s when it occurred to us that we were fighting this situation from the wrong angle.

During our little chat with the previous owners they spilled the beans that she was a “rescue” cow from a nearby dairy. It seems she (as a smaller framed Jersey) didn’t produce like the big Holsteins and they were going to send her to market. They buy these cows for near to nothing and resell them for the going family milk cow rate. “Polly”, as they instantly named her for internet sales purposes, had never actually been hand milked – she had been on a commercial milking circuit. We were told that none of the dairy workers there spoke English – so besides everything being very different everything even sounded different to her!

First thing the next morning we promptly changed Polly’s name. We decided that it was fake to begin with and she needed a brand new start! The boys named her “Lucy” from the character in the Chronicles of Narnia. We prayed over her and literally “cast out” anything that didn’t belong attached to her! The next thing I did was put a custom mixed Bach Flower Remedy in her drinking water. Then we tried milking her. Lucy let us milk her and was as sweet as she could be!

Now we were milking a cow and 2 goats and loving it! Fresh milk, homemade butter, cream, sour cream, cream cheese, clabbered milk, ice cream, cheeses (squeaky cheese curds are a fav!) and more!

We needed to breed Lucy back and would have to breed Buttercup once she was old enough so we bought a miniature Jersey bull and named him Beauregard. He turned out to do his job well, he is quite a beau! We eventually used him for stud services for others and he sired all heifers but one out of many rendezvous! (Heifers are preferred in the dairy cattle world). As perv as this sounds, it was actually very interesting to see the mating process! Once a heifer or cow was in standing heat they would run to each other like a love story in slow motion – galloping across the full length of a pasture! It didn’t take a total of 5 minutes for the actual event to occur but then the interesting part was how they were like love birds from then on. They would be inseparable; cuddling, necking, rubbing and munching fresh green grass side-by-side non-stop. It was precious!

We had to dry Lucy up several months before she was due to calve so that all of her energy could go to growing the calf. So with 2 dairy cows we had no (cow) milk for that whole time. This is how people wind up with a whole herd of dairy cows! Luckily we had the goats still producing milk.

For the 1st year or so we just milked right out in the pasture since, technically, we live in the only barn on the property. Once time and finances allowed, Dwayne and the guys built this milking shed. It has a gate we can close and doubles as a birthing stall for when the goats or cows have newborns and we need to keep them safe from critters for a while. (I decorated it!).

Fast forward 9 months and it was Christmas Eve. The guys were all out doing evening chores and I was cooking in the barn-house. Bradley went out to clean the automatic waterer in the front pasture and came back screaming that Lucy had a calf! We all went out and found newborn little “Noel” being cleaned up by her mama. What a Christmas gift! We were also able to have fresh, cold, rich creamy cow’s milk with our homemade grain-free, sugar-free Christmas cookies!

Eventually our sweet little Buttercup calved and had Bleubelle, the most beautiful mini Jersey heifer in the world. Seriously, we’re sure of it! There are 2 registries for mini’s in the US and we’re on both of them. If we had more time at home we would have loved to start a whole herd of minis but the milking takes time! Once the calves were weaned and growing strong we adopted them out to wonderful homes. Noel went to the East coast of Florida (Jupiter Farms area) and Bleubelle went to North Georgia. The owner of one of the 2 mini registries bought Bleubelle and hopes to make many more minis! We still keep in regular contact with each family and the girls are growing into beautiful cows!

By this time we had milk coming out of our ears so we made the decision to sell our lovely Lucy. She went to another great family in Okeechobee, Florida. As time went by the family that bought Lucy’s calf (Noel) had another (human) baby and needed to sell her (Noel). Since we were in contact with all of the “adopted” families we were able to get them in touch with Lucy’s new family – who bought Noel!!! Now Lucy and Noel are together! That family now has a thriving little raw milk micro dairy!

Buttercup is giving the creamiest milk we’ve ever had! The 1st 1/3 of every 1/2 gallon Mason jar is all cream! She is bred back and is due to calve again in early May of 2015.

This post is kinda sorta a continuation of how “Our address changed (both home and internet)” and how we started our little homestead. That was the 1st article and the 2nd was “Homesteading – The Chickens”. If you didn’t see those you can catch up on the story if you’d like!

Our youngest son, Brett, wanted milk goats since he was small. We had determined he was lactose intolerant when we was a toddler and then eventually determined he was (more accurately) pasteurization intolerant as we learned more about this widespread issue in America. He could drink raw goats’ milk with no problem and had done so since he was young. Brett researched milk goats and determined that the Nubian breed was the right one for us.

About a month after moving out to our new homestead and a month after getting chickens (and then the book on how to raise chickens) we got word that there were 2 Nubian milk goat kids that had just been born to a friend of a friend. This friend knew Brett wanted 2 doelings (young females) and arranged for them to be held until she talked to us. They were exactly what he had been waiting for and were the exact price he was willing to pay. We didn’t think we were ready for goats yet – but there was the perfect scenario presented to us again. So what did we do? We let Brett buy his goats, then…bought a book about how to care for goats!

Twins, Missy and Molly, were bottle-fed their own mother’s milk for four months as we gradually weaned them. Once they were about 18 months old we had a neighboring Nubian buck from a friend down the road come to “visit”. Around 5 months later they each had a set of twins and our homestead milking adventures officially began!

We have had lots of help and advice from our friend and neighbor down the road, Glenna, who has quite a herd of dairy goats. Truth be told, we had her # on speed dial. Which brings up a good point. There a couple of things you should get before getting goats. Good neighbors and a good vet but don’t let the vet get your goat. We never had to call a vet because we had such a good neighbor but you should plan ahead just in case. It’s not so easy to find a vet that comes out for goats! Here in Florida there are vets for “small animals” (think Spot the dog and Whiskers the cat. Period.) There are also large animal vets – that mostly want to treat horses. If you have goats or cows you need good neighbors and to know the way to Tractor Supply.

We have used the fresh raw goat milk for drinking and making many dairy foods like yogurt, kefir and several types of soft cheeses, like Chevre, all of which we keep raw in the process. The Chevre we flavored many different ways with combinations of herbs, seasonings and preserved things like olives or fruits.

Missy and Molly have had another year’s kidding already and had beautiful kids. We have sold the kids after each set was weaned.

Many people are not interested in trying raw goats’ milk because they assume it has the flavor of store-bought pasteurized goat milk. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It is fresh and sweet and is actually creamier than cows’ milk because the cream is naturally homogenized throughout the milk. Perfect for smoothies!

One secret we found to avoid having an “off” flavor in goat milk is to make sure that there is not a buck in the same pasture or even neighboring pastures sharing the same fence line. The bucks “spray” the girls (for the lack of a more family-friendly term). We prefer to have the buck over for conjugal visits but not for cohabitating long-term with the goat girls.

If you are considering adding a farm animal to your own homestead there are several reasons we would highly suggest you consider goats:

They are as sweet as a pet dog. Goats have gotten bad press! Don’t believe all of the stories about how goats “eat anything” or how they get into trouble (break through fences, etc.).

Quite the opposite of the “goats eat anything” myth, we have found the goats to be quite picky eaters. They only want good foraged leafy greens and their small cup of “custom feed” that we make (I explain how we make our fermented feed in the Homesteading – The Chickens post).

Considering the whole “goats will eat a tin can” myth – seriously, what kind of respectable homesteading goat owner has coke cans laying around where goats could eat them?

We’ve never had trouble with our goats doing anything to “get into trouble”. First of all, we purposed to buy 2 goats at the same time so that they would have company. Goats are very social animals. Everything we’ve read says that trouble makers are usually just a single goat that is lonely and bored. Just like an untrained puppy left alone in the house…

We have thoroughly enjoyed our goatie girls! Our boys are becoming men now and their ambitions and careers take time. Brennan works full-time at his free-lance videography business, Mission Media Video , and stock options trading. Bradley and Brett (while still homeschooling high school) are now traveling almost every weekend (and often a few week days or nights) to play Americana genre music events (The Anderson Brothers). Of course, we always go with them so that means at least 1 person has to always stay home to milk the animals. With the frequency of events (gigs ; ) increasing, we reluctantly decided that Missy, Molly and their latest kids could go to live with some other aspiring homesteaders. We are now down to the chickens and cows (more about the cows next time!)…

If you are a small family (say, 6 or less), a couple or a single person wanting your own fresh raw milk then goats are the perfect producer for you! They give just enough fresh raw milk to drink and use but not so much that you have to sell it or for you to have to be bathing in it. Seriously though, you could bathe in it – Cleopatra did!

Once we moved from the outer edge of suburbia to our new homestead property we found ourselves camping out off-grid-style for quite a while before our new/old barn home was livable. The move happened so fast we didn’t have time to send friendly little address change notices (or to realize we hadn’t!). We were suddenly thrust into the throws of the life we had dreamed of for years. In the transition to our new life we had to make the hard decision to shut down our Real Life Natural Health website. Real life had suddenly taken over.

(This is the next segment after the post on how “How Our Address Changed (Home and Web)” and how we started our little homestead. SO, if you’re a chronologically-ordered kind of reader (I can relate to that!) and you didn’t see that article yet you can catch up on the story if you’d like! I’ll wait right here until you come back!)

Moving on… (get it? We had just moved to the homestead property). We thought we had a big fancy long-term plan for which order we wanted to do things on the farm but that was completely turned upside down. Life has a way of doing that sometimes!

“A person may plan his own journey, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (GW)

“Many plans are in the human heart, but the advice of the Lord will endure.” Proverbs 19:21 (GW)

Amen to that! Our goal was to get all of the barn/house remodeling and restoration completed before getting any animals. Little did we know how long the restoration process would take! As in – still happening 3 years later…

We moved in here on July 1 of 2011. Before one full moon had passed an opportunity came for us to get 48 Rhode Island Red chicks for less than $40! Here’s what happened: Some friends and also “down the road neighbors” came for a visit and to share a grilled outside summer meal in the breezeway “dining room”. That sounds lovely doesn’t it? Maybe you’re picturing a Southern Living spread but at this point all of our meals were grilled outdoors and eaten on a folding table set up in the breezeway of the barn – let’s call it “al fresco” dining, shall we? And our dinnerware was, um, tree-wood sourced and recyclable…

As the afternoon heat eased into evening we enjoyed some freshly fermented apricot water kefir on ice, grass-fed burgers with cultured ketchup and a bit of our spicy sauerkraut. Pretty soon the conversation led to a small animal auction near our old house. Both families had been curious to go so we gathered up and caravanned out there. It was a steamy Florida night and, well, humidity and animal poop all combined in a small warehouse with more people than the fire code allows convinced us to mingle outside for a bit to cool off.

Low and behold, once we stepped out we ran into an old neighbor that we bought our fresh eggs from each week. It just so happened that another friend of his that had a small hatchery way on down the road had brought his chicks to sell but no one needed any. He was spittin’ mad that he had come all that way with his peeps and they hadn’t “blankety-blank” sold the whole “!@#$%” night. We smiled and politely slipped away with the kids to revisit the auctioning.

Pretty soon our farmer friend came up with a deal – make his friend happy and get us started with our chickens at the same time! A deal too good to pass up – 48 pullets for $36! Apparently that figure was the total it cost him to drive there and enter the auction. For us < math scholars that’s .75 cents a chick! Maybe it was the water kefir talking, but we grinned and said, “OK!”

We brought them home in borrowed crab traps from the friends that hooked us up with the chick guy. It was dark by the time we got them home so we transferred them to a big dog cage (borrowed from our Golden Retriever) because the little existing chicken coop on the property was in serious need of repair. Being first time chicken masters we placed them right in the yard light’s rays (and left it on all night!). Of course, we couldn’t see them if we wanted to because we had covered the dog crate with a tarp and wrapped it with hog wire to keep the bigger critters out.

Now for any homesteading wannabe’s out there – what I’m about to tell you is not something we suggest: we bought the chickens, then we bought a book about how to raise chickens. I would like to say we learned our lesson there, but the truth is, this was a pattern that would repeat several more times. I thought about calling this post “How Not to Homestead” but you know what? We really were doing it pioneer-style. The early pioneers were doing something new that they had never done before, going to new places and having to learn new ways of doing things. And that is exactly what we were doing! We figured it out as we went (or more appropriately, “as we are going”)!

We not only repaired the little bitty chicken coop (the next day) but eventually built a real chicken coop and even a DIY chicken tractor. About half of the chicks turned out to be pullets (later to be laying hens) and half were roosters so we built the tractor to house the roosters for meat birds. (Rhode Island Reds are considered “a cross-over breed”, being good for both laying and as meat birds – which makes them a good choice for a small family farm). We were able to move them around every day to fresh new green grass with a free buffet of bugs and worms for them while still keeping them separate from the hens (and one rooster we kept in with them). The hens and the rooster free-ranged all day and slept in the new coop condo at night.

We created our own method of feeding them to supplement the bugs and weeds they get while free-ranging. We would prefer to not feed the animals any grains at all but the reality is that the grass and sandy Florida soil is just not nutrient-dense enough to meet all of their dietary needs. We use a mixture of non-GMO grains that we sprout in an acid medium like whey or raw apple cider vinegar. We also put several important ingredients in there like diatomaceous earth, sea vegetables, real sea salt, probiotics and other health-supporting supps. The result is a small amount of easy-to-digest feed that has natural digestive enzymes and probiotic goodness with added minerals. They love it and each lay about an egg a day; delicious, bright sunny-yolked eggs!

About a year or so later we got another batch of biddies and this time ordered them on-line. I’ll just say that getting chicks in the mail is an experience. First of all, the post office doesn’t seem to enjoy hearing a package full of peeps when they arrive very early in the morning. So, they call you and strongly suggest you come to get them ASAP. The experience got more interesting when we got home and realized we were given someone else’s chicks by mistake! We finally got the wrong chicks (meat birds) watered, fed and delivered to their right home and retrieved our White Leghorn and Silver Leghorn chickies and brought them home. It’s about a 25 mile trip each way to the post office so a large part of that day was spent on the road (with peepers peeping prolifically!)

Our existing Rhode Island Red hens lay brown eggs so we ordered White and Silver Leghorns because the Leghorns (or Leggerns as our old timer Crackers say down here) lay white eggs. We are hoping that will help us to know when the Reds are no longer laying and are ready to retire their laying box positions.

We had to keep the chicks under a heat lamp in the breezeway of our barn for a while until they were old enough to withstand temperature changes. Once they reached pullet-size we moved them to the remodeled “little coop”. Eventually, as they grew they were moved to the portable chicken tractor in the same yard as the Reds to all get used to each other in a “safe” environment. Once they were large enough and all accustomed to each other we let them join the older girls in their free-rangin’, night coopin’ routine.

About the time they were old enough to move into the hen house we realized that one of them was a rooster. We already had one Rhode Island Red rooster (that the boys named “Steven Tyler” – because he struts around all cocky-like) as a guardian and care-taker of the hens but we decided it would be nice to have another younger rooster too. That way if anything ever happened to the Red we would still have one. Steven Tyler didn’t agree.

The white rooster looks like Foghorn Leghorn on the old Bugs Bunny cartoons! He, of course, thought he would rule the roost so there was a little pecking order that had to be worked out. Hard as it was for us, we had to let nature take its course. For a while Thor (the white rooster) walked around ashamed with no tail feathers, having been “put in his place” by Steven Tyler. [For the record, I refuse to call the rooster by that name and simply refer to him as “Roo-Roo” which is what the sweet little neighbor boys to the west of us called him.] Both roosters seem to have found their place now – with a flock of about 30 happy hens.

That’s a small summary. I left out a lot of details, like that chicken wire is useless to protect chickens! Raccoons can get their little paws right through those holes. Ironically, we had to use hardware “cloth” for the chicken coops, which is (also ironically) not cloth at all – but wire!

There was that one time a fox came for a little dinner visit with the chickens in the boy’s dorm (the DIY chicken tractor). That led to installing the solar-powered electric wire around it that we had to shut off every day to move the tractor and turn back on and often forgot whether it was off or on… a shockingly hard lesson to learn. The roosters were then quickly moved to colder country (in our freezer). I won’t share the details of that except that our sons all said that cleaning hogs was way easier than chickens. We’re not really the meat bird type. The little happy hens are more our speed (no “processing” necessary!)

Such is the life of the poultry on the Anderson Homestead (so far). Next time I’ll tell you how the next phase began…which was sooner than we had anticipated!

This is a little back story for our faithful long-time subscriber family and a condensed history for our new Abundant-Wellness subscribers. I’m sharing how our websites changed and also how we moved from neighborhood life to homesteading.

We’ve had a home on the internet for many years now. Our first website was called Welcome Home Families dot com. We started that around 2003 when our boys were still young. We had been homeschooling a few years and were just starting out on our homesteading journey. Of course, we didn’t actually have a homestead at the time; we lived in a neighborhood on the edge of suburbia and country road.

Our homesteading and natural health journey has been a gradual one. Years ago we were drive-through Happy Mealers but as our dream started to develop so did our knowledge and skill set. We studied and researched A LOT. As “all or nothing” natured as I am, I did realize that the majority of our family was not. Maybe this is true for many families? Sudden, drastic changes are hard for most people, especially children.

So, we made slow changes, one at a time; opting for healthier versions of food items, replacing one thing here and another thing there. Little by little our tastes changed with our menu and we realized eating real food the way God made it was way better than the processed, packaged, boxed, bagged (and drive-through) junk.

Eventually we made more things from scratch like our cleaning products and milling our own grain to bake homemade bread. Not only were we enjoying the health benefits but we liked the financial rewards as well! We shared those DIY things, creative homeschooling ideas and a lot of fun family-centric content on that first website.

Once I became a CNHP (Certified Natural Health Professional) we made a new net home and created Real Life Natural Health dot com. We still kept the content we had from our first gen Welcome Home site but added a lot more natural health topics.

With our boys getting older they each started to focus on skills and talents. Since we homeschooled we could build in a lot extra-curricular learning into our days along with the “3 R’s”. Our oldest son got the techno gene from his dad and started his own video production business when he was 16. He soon took that portion of the site work on and became our in-house videographer and editor for videos on the Real Life website. Our middle son really enjoyed art and designed our logo for that site. We all worked together to make it happen.

After many years of learning (inside the home) homesteading skills and natural health, we got the “Now!” Word from the Lord on New Year’s Eve of 2010. It was time to sell our house and buy a home in the country that would be our real life homestead. This happened at the height of the Real Life Natural Health website; site subscriptions were soaring, YouTube subscriptions were taking off and we had lots of great affiliates.

We took a few months to do some touch-up painting and re-organizing and in March of 2011 we put our house on the market (during the “down” real estate market when no homes had sold in our neighborhood for a long time!). By June of 2011 we got a call that our house had sold! In the same phone call our realtor told us that the property we looked at and liked (that had just sold) fell through at closing and was back on the market – that same day! We immediately made an offer on the bank-owned property.

This property was a diamond-in-the-rough, “treasure hidden in a field” kind of place. It had sat empty after a foreclosure for several years. It was a gorgeous piece of land with a barn. Period. Technically, no house. The previous owners had started remodeling this horse barn into a house before they left so it was a mess. It was literally the least expensive property in two counties listed on Realtor.com! But, the amazing thing was that God wanted us to have it! We put in a bid on the bank-owned property and we heard back the very same day that the bank accepted our offer!

The really crazy part happened the next day. The soon-to-be new owners for our existing home wanted to move into it in 12 days! So, we had 12 days to pack up an entire two-story, four-bedroom home that we had built 12 years prior! With the grace of God and the help of friends we moved everything, sort of Beverly Hillbillies style, to the barn.

Have you ever had someone ask you, “Did you grow up in a barn?!” because you left a door open? Maybe not, it could just be a southern saying. But suddenly we realized that our kids were going to be growing up in a barn, schooling in a barn and even going to church in a barn! The church part is a different barn but it’s a small fellowship of Believers only about a mile down the road and across a cattle gap.

At the time we moved in there was only one small bedroom and bathroom that was “livable” in the barn/house! We pretty much lived out of that one room and camped out the best we could until we could get it remodeled little by little. We cooked on a grill outside, ate our meals on a folding table in the breezeway and washed dishes in a bathroom sink!

It was an amazing adventure, especially for three teen-aged boys but it didn’t fare well for my website. We did have electricity but otherwise were completely off-grid. No internet. At first I thought I could manage it by driving into town (30 minutes each way) to use the internet at the library but that didn’t last long. I kept thinking that we would get internet and be able to post again but the promised broad-band project to our area took much longer than we had hoped. We had a lot of work to do to get the infrastructure of our new homestead in place (and that only happened when Dwayne was home from work – in the evenings and on the weekends) so we had to make the sad decision to shut down the Real Life Natural Health site.

Here we are, three years later and MUCH has changed! We eventually did get high-speed internet and have now started this brand new website: www.Abundant-Wellness.net. Are you wondering what happened in the last three years? I’ll fill you in on the “gap” next time.
